2000 Eid night one – a busy work day and another tomorrow but gotta meet some contractors from Waterloo Ontario tomorrow for dinner so staying in tonight – with my vodka shots and beer chasers – notice a theme here?

Pounded out guitar tunes for the last 1.5 hours - amazing what a new set of strings will do to brighten up the sound – thank god one of them breaks from time to time cause otherwise I don’t get it. that's the roadies job right?

Having an interesting contemplative evening as well around the HR king who wants me fired and has threaten to resign over my contact renewal. He is here today – sitting down the hall in the TV room. I said hello and gave him his plan tickie to Herat for Thursday but have not said another word and probably won’t. the big boss will deal with him demain.

Some interesting wonderings nonetheless

a) when I first came upstairs here a coupla hours ago I felt like I should say something – amend the silence – apologize – even just clear the air. This comes from a huge wound around lots of deadly silences with Margaret and wishing I had the power to break them and when I could not feeling responsible. Well ___ that I don’t give a ___ about this guy he is a little man. Opps there is the vodka talking – just dribbled a little chaser down on my new xmas shirt – a prezzie from the big boss graham and his wife – love them.

b) all that “___ the HR ___ ” notwithstanding it is my firm conviction that as a humble social change agent I need to reach out – love my enemies – heh there is another Margaret theme cause I absolutely hated her ex-___. Well that was not healthy for me – the great poetry notwithstanding – but it also is not consistent with my emerging belief that we really need to try to love our neighbours. Whatever they do to us – its clear that the ex-___ was not totally in control of his oppressive behaviour himself. But responsibly aside –I gotta forgive! – love! But my goodness it is so difficult.

Vodka helps. Cheap love. One of the social platforms for my next political campaign – you will be responsible for security i hope - will be that in addition (addiction?) to a minimum wage there will be a minimum vodka ration for every person that is eligible – and of course like Kyoto one will be able to trade one’s credits for other vices or negligencies.

Life is grand tonight

Dec 30 2005 Snowless in Kabul. But warm – relatively speaking when I recall the sub zero average temperatures at home on the eve. It was a bit chilly in the shade at the squash court yesterday – we bat the ball around in a bunker at the old Pakistan embassy in the heart of a suburb long sympathetic to the northern alliance. Even today the Pakistan embassy refuses to rebuild and tempt the rockets once again.

Saw angels last evening. Well add a long yoga stretch and a bowl of vegetables soup with lots of chilies and its no surprise that my head was light. Cooking again for the first time in a year – our main is off on a much deserved ten day holiday and I am re-discovering old skills. Pulled out the emergency kit my daughter packed for me a year ago and there is a whack of miso soup stock and ten pairs of chopsticks.

Heated correspondence with home re the United Church’s first request for a gay marriage in La Pêche. I write a humble letter in favour and distribute it to every email address that might make a difference – this issue threatens to divide the church like no other and undermine the last few years of community outreach that we have done. Not to mention challenge our very progressive minister – on the other hand she might see a no vote as a sign that there is still much work to be done in house.

A number of potential employers sent little pre-Xmas gifts and in the end I have decided to sign on with World Vision for another six months – to lead the development of an exciting initiative in pursuit of funding, partners and building a sustainable economy in this fragile country. Had to turn down a generous offer from Save the Kids Pakistan to move quickly into their relief management – ah hard choices are nice to have. Celebrated yesterday with lunch at the Elbow Room – I am generally a low profile guy cautious of the ex-pat hangouts but my the blazing fire and the core of Brits at the bar has me tempted to get on the circuit social circuit.
